The work. Krueger coined the term rent-seeking in 1974, measuring what economies lose when firms burn real resources chasing import licenses and government favors. She later ran the numbers at the top, as World Bank chief economist and IMF first deputy managing director.
The case for. Rent-seeking is now a household idea in political economy, and the committee likes concepts that escaped the seminar room.
The case against. She is in her nineties, Tullock, who shared the citation, died in 2014, and the committee rarely reaches back fifty years without a living pair.
The KmikeyM angle. A shareholder bloc lobbying for a vote that pays them and costs the company is rent-seeking with a ticker symbol.
