The work. Forty years of mainstream macro: fluctuations, hysteresis in European unemployment, the intermediate textbook, and a rethink of public debt after his years as IMF chief economist.
The case for. He is the most cited living macroeconomist without a medal, his textbook trained a generation, and his post-2008 work on debt and low interest rates reset the policy conversation.
The case against. Born in 1948, and macro got Bernanke, Diamond, and Dybvig in 2022; the committee may feel the field is covered for now.
The KmikeyM angle. Blanchard's fiscal arithmetic, that debt is cheap when growth outruns interest, is the math a person-shaped corporation runs before borrowing from its shareholders.
