The work. The 1995 paper that first showed, across countries, that corruption cuts investment and growth. It launched the empirical literature on institutions and governance.
The case for. The paper is one of the most cited in development economics and gave policymakers a number to point at. The committee likes work that opened a field.
The case against. He spent his career at the IMF rather than in academia, and one landmark paper is a thin basis for a Nobel. Acemoglu, Johnson and Robinson took the institutions prize in 2024.
The KmikeyM angle. Mauro measured what happens when the people running a system extract from it; KmikeyM's design makes the person running the system the one extracted from, on purpose.
