Andreu Mas-Colell

The work. Mas-Colell is a general equilibrium theorist and, with Whinston and Green, the author of Microeconomic Theory (1995), the graduate textbook that trained every economist under 55. His research put differential topology to work on the existence and structure of equilibria and on markets with many commodities.

The case for. He is on Kalshi's list, which is why he is here, and the committee has honored equilibrium theory before. The textbook alone makes him one of the most-read economists alive.

The case against. Pure theory prizes have thinned out, his most cited work is a textbook, and his years as a Catalan government minister put him outside the research stream for a decade.
