KmikeyM covers the Econ Nobel

Kalshi has been open since July, and Athey moved on Clarivate day

Kalshi's 2026 Economics Nobel market lists nine names. Ariel Pakes leads at 22 cents, Susan Athey jumped to 19 the morning Clarivate named her, and the whole book is thin.

We assumed the markets would open in October. Wrong. Kalshi's 2026 Economics Nobel market has been open since July 1, with nine names and a close on announcement day. Polymarket still has nothing for economics; its Peace and Literature markets draw the money, and economics gets a contract late if at all.

What the book says. Nobody is priced anywhere near a coin flip. Ariel Pakes leads at 22 cents on a trade from late August. Susan Athey is the story: on the morning of September 17, the day Clarivate named her, somebody bought 500 contracts at 15, a smaller order spiked the price to 67 for a moment, and it settled at 19. That is the only trade on this market that reacted to news, and it is the only Clarivate 2026 name Kalshi lists at all. Robert Barro, Richard Blundell, Ernst Fehr, Andreu Mas-Colell and Matthew Rabin have never traded, so we carry the midpoint of their resting bids and asks, around 10. Partha Dasgupta and Luigi Zingales last traded at 6. Add it up and the nine names cover well under a hundred points, so the market thinks the winner may not be on its list at all. That is honest, and it matches history.

How thin. Each contract has a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars resting on either side, and the spread is eight cents wide on most of them. We record the price Kalshi shows, which is the last trade, and fall back to the midpoint for contracts that have never printed. When the spread tightens in October, the numbers will mean more.

What it does to the board. Kalshi is the first live market, and at weight 3 it now shares the denominator with Clarivate. The four Clarivate names split: Athey, with both Clarivate and Kalshi behind her, takes the top line alone; Varian, Woodford and Winter drop to the Contender floor on Clarivate alone. Everyone on the Clarivate bench who Kalshi does not price falls into the Field. Two names join the tracker because Kalshi lists them: Mas-Colell and Zingales.

The one we watch. Athey is the only economist both Clarivate and Kalshi agree on, and the only one whose price moved on news. That is the strongest cross-source signal on the board, and it is why she is the leader tonight.
