Susan C. Athey

The work. Athey is the economist who took auction theory and mechanism design into the machine age. Her early work on comparative statics and auctions was pure theory; then she spent years as Microsoft's chief economist and came back writing about how platforms should price, match, and learn. Along the way she became one of the leading voices on using machine learning inside causal inference, so that a policy evaluation and a recommendation engine can be built with the same tools.

The case for. She is the first woman to win the John Bates Clark Medal, the most cited living economist on the economics of technology, and Clarivate just paired her with Hal Varian under a single citation. That is the committee's favorite shape: two people, one field, one clean sentence. The digital economy has not had its Nobel yet, and it is overdue.

The case against. Her body of work is wide rather than deep on one theorem, and the committee likes a theorem. Mechanism design was rewarded in 2007 and auctions in 2020, so a third prize in the neighborhood needs a distinct story. She is also young by Nobel standards, and the committee has time.
