Clarivate names four, and two of them run the internet

Susan Athey, Hal Varian, Michael Woodford and Sidney Winter are the 2026 Citation Laureates in economics. The digital economy finally has a ticket.

The combine opened this morning. Clarivate, whose Citation Laureates list is the closest thing the Nobel has to a scouting report with a track record, named four economists for 2026: Susan Athey and Hal Varian under one citation for the economics of information technology, Michael Woodford for the theory and practice of monetary policy, and Sidney Winter for an evolutionary theory of the firm.

Read it as three tickets, not four. Athey and Varian are a pair, the shape the committee loves: one field, two names, one sentence. The field is the one that has been conspicuously missing from the record. Auctions got a prize in 2020, mechanism design in 2007, and the internet has never had one, despite being the largest economic fact of the last thirty years. Varian designed the ad auction at Google. Athey took mechanism design into machine learning. If the committee wants to say "the digital economy," this is how it says it.

Woodford is the central bankers' pick. Every rich-world central bank has spent two decades running policy through his framework. The knock is timing: the committee visited monetary economics in 2022 and rarely comes back that fast.

Winter is the sentimental pick and the long shot. His co-author Richard Nelson died last year, and the committee does not love rewarding half a pair. But he is 91, the book is a monument, and Clarivate does not name people by accident.

What it does to the board. All four enter as Locks. Everyone else Clarivate ever named who has not won yet, and that is a long bench, sits below them as a Darkhorse until another source publishes. The markets have not opened. When they do, in early October, this board reshuffles, and that is what the replay is for.

Locks Highly cited, long overdue, every signal agrees.
